First Indonesia Structural Biology Summit 2025

Structural biology has transformed our understanding of life by revealing how proteins, nucleic acids, and their complexes function at the molecular level. The emergence of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM)—awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry—has revolutionized the field, enabling near-atomic resolution studies of challenging targets such as membrane proteins, ribosomes, and viruses.

In the Asia-Pacific region, rapid investments have positioned Japan, China, South Korea, and Singapore as global leaders in cryo-EM. Indonesia, with its rich biodiversity, is poised to contribute significantly to this dynamic landscape. To bridge gaps in infrastructure and expertise, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is establishing a national cryo-EM facility, supported by the formation of the Indonesian Structural Biology Association (ISBA).

The inaugural FISB-Summit 2025 marks a milestone, bringing together researchers, industry, and international partners to showcase cutting-edge advances, foster collaboration, and position Indonesia as a hub for structural biology innovation in drug discovery, vaccine development, agricultural biotechnology, and environmental sustainability.
